Who Did It Better?

Nancy Sinatra!

Cher & Glen Campbell!

Raquel Welch!

Dalida!

Or worse? You tell us! Of course it's all relative and just for fun. We're thinking of making this a regular feature here. Why not?

  1. For sheer insanity, my favorite version is actually KAREN BLACK & L7! https://youtu.be/lk_fNupq9yg

    1. About a decade back, I saw Ms. Black in concert and the highlight — for reals — was her version of Bowie's "Time" wherein she channeled Marlene Dietrich.

  2. As we used to say at a newspaper I worked at when all hell inevitably broke loose: KAREN BLACK IS AT THE CONTROLS!

  3. It's already chockfull of "Bang Bang" riches above, but I am compelled to share the official "hit" version of the song in France by Sheila (later known as disco diva "Sheila and B. Devotion"): http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xqbog_sheila-bang-bang_music

  4. Out of the above, maybe Raquel. Overall, I'm afraid Karen Black wins; Karen Black always wins.

  5. oh my - how does one pick?! I'd say Cher because it's a ridiculous song and she has a sense of humor about it.

  6. Cher wins with the bonus points she got for Glen Campbells hair.

  7. I'm'a give to Cher, too, though she loses points for allowing Glen Campbell to do those 'bang bang' hand gestures.

Nancy S: leave the high school French to the high school.

Raquel: this looks like a deleted scene from Valley of the Dolls of a craptastic Broadway musical Helen Lawson turned down.

Dalida: she's giving me checker at Food lion so it's a 'No' for me.

  8. Dalida can do no wrong, and she wins for gravity and stillness (qualities that suit this song well, should one choose to play it straight. As often when I hear her, the most I can say about Nancy is that she's Surprisingly Not-Incompentent. Cher and Glen are just having fun, but it's pretty forced. As for Raquel, well - to me, she shares with Pia Zadora the remarkable quality of sounding like she's singing flat even when, technically, she's not. Which is at least some of the time. As for her dancing? On that front, all the Safety Gays in the world can only do so much...

But Karen Black? Wow. Wow. Wow. What a reminder of how much she's missed...

  9. I just realized that I have actually seen three of these women in person. Two of them on the same night!

  10. It's hard to top Muscato's reflections on this line-up. Nancy's was the only version I'd ever previously heard! And I like it okay. Cher was fun, I guess. Raquel... I loved her presentation, kicky and fun, but her vocal was thin and she seemed to be hovering near the pitch without ever landing on it! I had to pig-snort at the phallic use of the rifles and where the first couple of dancers were pointing theirs. Dalida was enjoyable. As for Karen Black, I never knew she was a baritone!

  12. Fun fact: Raquel swiped her arrangement from Petula Clark, who recorded it a year or two prior on her I COULDN'T LIVE WITHOUT YOUR LOVE album.

    1. I actually looked for a Petula clip for this post, but alas only the album track could be found. I'd also hoped to find a Vikki Carr version. I don't know if she ever sang this song but can you just imagine??

  13. Dear Thombeau, I used to frequent your Chateau years ago, and Fabulon before that. Might I be permitted to visit the Chateau once again? Best wishes.

    1. Hello Spectre! I have more or less retired from blogging, though that is always subject to change. Are you on Facebook? If you'd like to connect there (provided you are not a Trump supporter!) send me an email at thombeau(at)post.com. Admittedly my FB posts are not nearly as fabulous as those old blogs but so it goes.
