I just can't decide what entrances me more: the breaking-the-fourth-wall glare at 1:28 or the little Barbra run at 2:19.I also can't decide if she's consciously doing a Diahann-Carroll-on-speed impression, or if Diahann saw this and based her entire subsequent career on it.
Makes me think of Neely O'Hara if she'd taken lessons from Helen Lawson!
Never mind Miss Carroll, I have been doing these arm-and-mouth gestures for thirty years now! The wig's a bit ratty, though... Jx
I am SO unfamiliar with this era/stage of The Ed Sullivan Show! Fascinating clips & performance. (Why did 1:28 remind me of one of Nichelle "Lt. Uhura" Nichols' publicity photos from "Star Trek?")
I had no memory of Ed being nearly so groovy. And they must have stapled that wig on.
It always depresses me when drag queens think Beyoncé is a figure to be emulated when there's gold to be mined like Dame Bassey performing her "Today and Yesterday" medley. (We all know that no drag queen could hope to hit those heights but, as the great Robert Browning said, "a drag queen's reach should exceed her grasp.")
i believe i was out this sunday night in 1971 & missed this.i'm now questioning my entire life.
