That's just about as exact a definition of the Bassey magic as one can come up with.Sadly (up to a point), this is a song that repeated exposures to Lypsinka have rendered inevitably hilarious to me. I keep waiting for the cereal box.
I love the "spontaneous" bursts of applause every time she doesn't give a damn!
I love how the sheer power of her voice makes the boom mike bob up and down, as if it were scared of her.
As indeed it should be!
Usually I'm all about "the more OTT, the better," but this had me thinking, "Oh Honey, let's take it down a notch." (I admit my original exposure to this song was back in its late '70s disco version by Dame Bassey, but still ...)
There will never be another Dame Shirl - she is magnificent! By the way, if you never saw it, in the BBC biopic Shirley Miss Ruth Negga makes a sterling effort to re-create this entire actual performance, gesture for gesture, lip-curl for lip-curl... Catch it if you can! Jx
do you think anyone ever said "shirley, once more from the top, and can you perhaps sell it just a little?"
