there's video on Youtube of Jim Bailey (in drag as Babs) w/ Minnie Pearl and a blonde Vicki Lawrence performing the halftime show for the '78 Super Bowl. let's just say it should go in the dictionary under the word trainwreck
I actually watched that the other night. It's all pretty hard to believe.
I saw Mr. Jim Bailey in concert many, many years ago; he was only doing one impression per night as a full evening's entertainment. I was hoping for Barbra, but I got Judy. I was disappointed.
Isn't illusion fabulous? In that vain, as a personal aside Thom, I am so flattered that, so many years ago in that Chicago club, you mistook me for Divine!
"You gotta have a gimmick"? That was his life! Jx
And still is! As of a year or so ago (the last I read about him), he was still on the road with the act, having now done Judy for more years than Baby Gumm lived Judy.I saw him 'round about '80 (back when I was a tot) at an Oz event that also featured Margaret Hamilton and a host of the then-surviving Munchkins. He was a trouper, even though he was clearly weirding out Miss Hamilton.
What you have to remember is that he did this back when there was no internet or dvd or even video to study. I mean, how did he even observe enough of these girls to get the gestures and looks so right? Very impressive.
I admire Jim Bailey, he did a great job as Judy. Somehow each season the Burnett show always managed to get Lyle Waggoner to appear wearing a skimpy wraparound-towel (usually as part of a comedy sketch) and not much else. For that, I'm very very grateful. Too bad they never did a musical number with him dressed (semi-dressed) like that. He was definitely a nice piece of man-candy back in the day.
They certainly used Mr. Waggoner to our advantage!
he was an incredible illusionist. Went to see to see frank mariano in detroit a few weeks ago - all lip sync. disappointed.
